Emotional intelligence in leadership is not a soft skill you pick up in a seminar. It is built person by person, sector by sector, long before you lead anything important. In Chapter 5 of my book, Built. Brick by Brick., the third of the Four Areas is friends, and the rule is plain: build friends in every sector. Not just your team. Not just your industry. Every sector, and every type of person in it.
The Four Areas are school, athletics, friends, and be a good human, written out in The Code. School comes first. Athletics teaches the standard. Friends teach you how to read a room and respect a room. Emotional intelligence does not come from a title. It comes from years of paying attention to people who do not think, work, or live exactly like you.
The mistake inside one circle
Most young athletes get this area wrong. They only know the cool kids, the starters, the people inside their own circle. Most young operators make the same mistake later with better clothes. They only know their own industry, their own level, their own table.
A one circle life feels safe, and it makes you fragile. If all your friends are in one sector, you only hear one version of every problem. You miss how a coach, a doctor, a founder, and a parent in the stands each see it. Leadership gets narrow when your world stays narrow.
What emotional intelligence actually looks like
The person with friends in all sectors has the highest emotional intelligence, and emotional intelligence is one of the top characteristics of successful people. I have said that for years because I have watched it prove out in locker rooms and in business rooms alike.
Emotional intelligence is not being nice on command. It is reading someone honestly: what they care about, what worries them, what a win looks like for them, not just for you. Years in sales taught me to read a person fast, and I learned early that it is tough to teach that skill from a book. You learn it by sitting with different kinds of people, asking real questions, and remembering the answers when there is nothing in it for you.
Friends in every sector only works if being a good human keeps the relationships honest. A network built on using people collapses. A network built on respect compounds. I wrote about that test in The Camera Is Always On, because how you treat people when no title is on the line is the footage that travels.
Give access before you need anything
Here is the part most people skip: connect people before you need anything from them. I have done that my whole life. I have connected vendors to events where they got exposure, access, and contacts they could never have reached alone, even when the pay for that one night was not the point.
One example is a step and repeat vendor I connected to a New York Fashion Week event he would never have gotten into on his own. He did not make a lot that night, but he got the access, and he made money on a Tuesday when he otherwise would have made zero. More than the money, he left with a room of people who now knew his work. A good connection gives someone a door, not just a deal.
Notice the order. I did not wait until I needed a favor back. I gave first, with no scoreboard. People remember who opened a door when they had no reason to, and who only called when they needed something. Over 25 years, that difference becomes your reputation.
Rooms talk to each other
That is not theory in my life. The network that started in locker rooms now runs from locker rooms to operating rooms to Hamptons ballrooms to Dubai. None of that was built by staying inside one circle. It was built sector by sector, one honest relationship at a time, over a career that started in 2001.
Rooms talk to each other even when you are not there. A coach hears how you treated a trainer. A partner hears how you treated a vendor. Friends in every sector is not a contact list. It is a character record, written by other people, in rooms you will never enter.
That is why I teach this inside The Four Areas: School Comes First. Friends without character becomes networking for show. Put them together and you get a leader other sectors trust, because they have watched you be the same person in every room.
How to build friends in every sector this week
You do not need a bigger event or a better title to start. You need four small habits, worked daily.
1. Learn one person outside your circle. Learn a name, ask a real question about their work, and remember the answer next time you see them.
2. Make one introduction with nothing in it for you. Connect two people who should know each other, say why in one clear line, and step back.
3. Give access, not just advice. Share a room, a contact, or an opportunity that costs you little and could change someone else's week.
4. Be the same person in every room. Same respect for the star and the staff, same standard early and late. That consistency is what emotional intelligence looks like from the outside.
Start with one sector you know nothing about and one person you have been meaning to actually know. Do it this week, not when you need a favor. Build friends in every sector long enough and rooms start asking for you by name, because people already know how you lead: you respect everyone in the room and you open doors on the way in. That standard travels everywhere.
